Seafood Pancakes from the House of Suh

My silly friend SS lovesss spreading good cheer and good food. It's an innate quality in her and the entire Suh family - they love to give. In fact, they follow my food philosophy 'sharing is caring' to the tee and I'm very lucky to be a constant recipient of their generosity. So thank you to the House of Suh for enriching my knowledge of Korean food. :)

This is my second post on homemade food by the Suhs. The first time being delicious kimbap by LS and now seafood pancakes aka heh mool been deh duk by SS (or really, just her mama). Most of you have probably tried this crispy, crunchy, doughy delight in any Korean restaurant but how many of you non-Koreans can say you've had it homemade? I can!!! The base ingredients consist of Korean pancake mix, green onions and egg. This version is tossed with imitation crab, octopus, squid, oysters, onions and zucchini and then pan fried to a golden brown. Then dipped in a mixture of vinegar and soy sauce. Yum! I also recently got to sample kimchi pancake by my friend HS which will be posted shortly. :)

SS was super thoughtful in that she had her mom also prepare me some of my favorite Korean side dish - stewed potatoes in sugar, soya sauce, sesame oil and sesame. Oh and probably the best ingredient, love!

And I will end this post with an irresistible donut 'qua beh gee' from the Korean supermarket, H-Mart. Made with rice flour 'chap sal', twisted and fried and topped off with sugar and cinnamon, this amazing pastry is reminiscent of something I compare to a beaver's tail from Londsale Quay or zeppole from Scuie. Scrumptious!

My Wish Came True - Homemade Kimbap At My Door!

So you all know that my sister Linda is a great cook. I've posted many of her homemade dishes and admit it, they've had you drooling. Now one of my colleagues, SS, also has a sister named Linda who is quite the chef. WITH A BIG HEART! She offered to make us gals a nice homemade lunch consisting of kimbap, inari (with extra radish, crab meat and ginger on the side), and instant ramen noodles! SS claims that they have to be eaten together and indeed, they paired well! I absolutely loved the mixture of hot, hot instant noodles with cold/room temperature rice. My personal fave was the inari. Look at the beautiful presentation!

SS also taught me another trick on how to wolf down a piping hot cup of noodles. Remove the lid, fold it into a cone (simple origami in her mind, but complex in mine), place some noodles in the cone to cool down, and slurp when ready! For someone like me who has a difficult time eating hot foods, this method is gold! Give it a whirl people! :)

Mmmmm Bop! For Kimbap!

My latest 'snack obsession' is what I call Korean sushi but better known as 'kimbap'. You can pick this up at your local H-Mart and enjoy immediately after purchase! No cooking instruction necessary. Served a bit chilled, this 'single maki' is made with sushi nori, cooked rice, salt, sesame oil, fish cake, radish, egg, cucumber, terryaki beef and carrot - all for only $2.99! Don't be fooled, there are quite a few pieces in this package to go and can fill you up for a nice small lunch or big snack. I crave this allll the timeeeeee.

Korean Delights at Red Chicken

Another lunchtime spot I discovered working in the heart of downtown is this Korean joint, Red Chicken on Robson and Bute. AF and I started with their pan fried dumplings and they were delicious to begin our meal with.

Secondly, we had their seafood pancake which is a MUST every time I dine Korean. Entangled in strips of potato, imitation crab meat, squid, green onion, and shrimp, this unique treat is crispy, savoury and best dipped with the vinegar sauce above.

One of my favorite things about dining at a Korean restaurant are the side dishes that accompany your meal. They are great to cleanse the palate with and offer a variety of interesting types. For example, this time we had bean sprouts, kimchi, broccoli with spicy sauce and mashed potatoes. Random but lovely! You will also see a milky broth noodle we ordered as well but we weren't big fans of it so definitely not worth my blogging breath.
