Part 2 of Carribean 'Tings' at The Reef

Continuing on from my last post in June 2010 on The Reef, here's an update on two more of their delectable 'tings'. Their Moca Burger as you see above is a great option for a non-meat burger (and my healthy food loving friend KL decided to give it a whirl). Take it from me, someone who definitely enjoys a juicy chicken or beef burger over the veggie patties. This jerk-seasoned hefty slice of tofu is topped off with grilled pineapple, provolone, salsa and greens and let me tell ya, that cheese really brings out the flavor of the tofu. Served with succulent yam fries and a spicy mayo, this meal is complete. Can't wait to get my hands on that burger again.

I on the other hand, ordered their Ackee and Saltfish since I was craving it from my few bites of this dish when my friend DC had it a while back. It wasn't AS good as I remembered but it still made a good impact on my impression of Carribean food. Known as one of Jamaica's national dishes, this meal is made with ackee fruit, salt cod, onion, tomato and peppers. Tasting similar to a mushy egg omelet with the listed ingredients, it paired well with the rice and coleslaw. And of course, plopped smack in the middle of the dish was a Phan Fave - Johnnycake. :)

In DIRE Need of Another Mama Bev's Jamaican Beef Patty!!!

Can someone please tell me where I can get a Jamaican patty that looks and tastes just as good as the one from Mama Bev's? I guess I haven't searched THAT hard yet but I will be forever indebted to you if you reveal the secret Jamaican food hot spots to me! Mama Bev's is a popular food stand that can be found at summer festivals such as the Jazz Festival, Caribbean Festival, even the Folk Festival! However, I can't find the storefront! It must be in North Vancouver somewhere ... Anyhoo, the 'patties' from The Reef are a 1/10 compared to one above which I rate 20/10. Seriously. The moist, tender, spice induced ground beef filling embraced in a warm, buttery crust makes me salivate just thinking about it. I am in DIRE need of another one of these. HELP! A Phan fave, FOSHO!

'Jamaican Me Hungry' at The Reef!

The Reef on Commercial Drive. The perfect place to brunch on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Feeling like you're dining in a straw hut, reggae tunes in your ear and the best comfort food in the block, it was the best way to treat my taste buds. Here you see their famous johnny cakes served with coconut butter. PLUS, if you go on the weekends, the insides are filled with bananas! What could be better? My sister one time had a mango surprise in hers! YUMMY!

The Reef also usually has a smoothie special on weekends as well. This time, I slurped on a mango, pineapple, strawberry, banana smoothie and WOW, seriously WOW. It was the most delicious smoothie I've had in a while, complimented my meal quite nicely.

Now for their daily special, jerk salmon omelet with a cream cheese sauce served with toast and jam. I honestly have not had such a good restaurant food experience since The Flying Tiger. All of the flavors just intertwined so well - I was amazed!

I also shared their trini roti filled with their jerk tofu, served with a side of fresh coleslaw. Jerk anything is delicious! I would also recommend their Island Thyme Chicken, Fried Chicken and Calypso Oxtail. Chill environment, best reggae jams a restaurant in Vancouver has to offer, in the neighborhood AND tasty, filling food? I'LL BE BACK!

PS - I'm sorry to have taken such a long food blogging hiatus! I promise to never leave you pigs stranded for this long ever again!
